- Nurturing a Love for Allah's Words
The Quran competition a cherished annual event at our mosque, stands as a testament to our community's dedication to the preservation and promotion of Allah's divine words. This competition, which began in 2019, is a manifestation of our commitment to the Prophetic tradition that states, "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it" (Sahih Al-Bukhari).
Purpose and Significance
The primary goal of this competition is to encourage both children and adults to engage deeply with the Quran, fostering a lifelong connection with Allah's message. This aligns perfectly with the Islamic emphasis on education, particularly Quranic education, as highlighted in the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "Read in the name of your Lord who created" (Quran 96:1).
By organizing this competition, we aim to:
1. Motivate continuous Quranic study and memorization
2. Strengthen the community's bond with the Quran
3. Encourage parents to support their children's Quranic education
4. Create a positive, supportive environment for Quranic learning
5. Recognize and reward dedication to Quranic studies

Competition Structure and Inclusivity
The competition is designed to be inclusive, catering to participants of all ages, from young children to adults. Preparations begin as early as 6-7 months before the contest, allowing ample time for participants to memorize and perfect their recitations. Importantly, the focus of the competition is on the recitation of the Holy Quran, rather than on the intricate rules of Tajweed. This approach ensures that the competition remains accessible to both Arabic and non-Arabic speakers, embodying the universal nature of the Quran's message.
Judging and Awards
A panel of three esteemed judges oversees the contest:
1. Br. Sirwan Jeff
2. Sis. Hala Yousef
3. Br. Hasan Dasooqi
These judges, well-versed in Quranic recitation, evaluate the participants based on criteria that may vary from year to year, always maintaining fairness and encouraging improvement. In the spirit of encouragement and recognition of effort, all participants receive an award. However, the winners are presented with more valuable prizes, serving as an additional motivation for excellence in Quranic memorization and recitation.
Annual Variations and Announcements
The contest levels and rules are subject to change each year, allowing for flexibility and continuous improvement of the competition format. Detailed information about the upcoming competition is typically announced well in advance, giving potential participants ample time to prepare.
Award Ceremony
The distribution of prizes and certificates of participation takes place in a ceremonial fashion on the day of Eid ul Fitr celebration. This timing is significant, as it connects the achievement of Quranic learning with one of the most joyous occasions in the Islamic calendar. The ceremony not only honors the participants but also inspires others in the community to engage more deeply with the Quran.
Community Involvement and Support
The success of this program relies heavily on community involvement and support. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all donors for their generous contributions, which enable us to organize this event and provide meaningful prizes to participants. For those wishing to contribute to this noble cause, donations can be made via Venmo or PayPal, ensuring the continuity and growth of this valuable program.

The Annual Quran Competition stands as a shining example of our community's dedication to Quranic education. It embodies the Islamic principle that seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim, and that the Quran holds a special place in this pursuit of knowledge. As we continue this tradition, we pray that Allah accepts our efforts, increases our understanding of His words, and guides us to live by the teachings of the Quran in our daily lives.
